The elephant headed god or Ganesha - fondly called Bappa signifies new beginnings, removal of obstacles and good fortune.
Ganesha is the most well known and loved deity who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
In India, every auspicious occasion begins by worshiping Lord Ganesha first. Worshipping Lord Ganesha doesn't restrict to auspicious occasions only but also when a new commodity has been purchased or to begin an event - Lord Ganesha is worshipped for good luck.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10 day long festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. This festival is celebrated all over India with immense amount of spirituality, love and enthusiasm.
The festivities begin by bringing home a Ganpati idol and installing it inside a pandal which is beautifully decorated with flowers, trinkets and as creative as one can get. Further, the pandit along with the family members conduct a puja everyday in order to worship the Lord. As Prasad, sweets especially Modak which happens to be Lord Ganesha 's favorite is prepared at home or purchased from market is distributed among everyone. The idol is then ( after the completion of one and a half days, five days, seven days and ten days) submerged in water. This is also known as 'Visarjan'.
